Gold does not tarnish like other metals but it can wear out and lose its sheen because of dirt and by wearing it everyday! To make sure that your gold jewellery looks new and shiny at all times you can follow some simple and safe DIYs at home. Take a look at some of these methods to get the perfect jewels for yourself.
#1 To retain the glow of your gold, use a liquid soap with water that works wonders. Just make sure that you don't have any gemstones on your jewellery. Take a bowl of lukewarm water, then add a few drops of soap or mild dishwashing soap to it. Soak your jewellery for 15-20 minutes in the solution then clean it gently using an ear bud. Use a clean cloth to wipe off the solution and then place it on a dry towel to completely dry it. This will help you remove oils that get accumulated on your jewellery.
#2 To clean gold rings that have no other metal or stones on it, use a toothpaste that is mild abrasive for loosening up the dirt and grime on your jewel pieces. Squeeze an inch of tooth into a bowl and add 2-3 tablespoon water in it. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub off the mix and finally rinse it with clean water.
#3 Jewellery with gemstones should not be soaked in water. Use a clean cloth to gently rub the gemstones and use another wet cloth to rinse the jewellery. Then keep your pieces upside down on a clean towel till it dries and wear it thereafter :)
#4 If your jewellery has certain spots that are hard to reach, take a very soft-bristle toothbrush, put it in water and use it to clean the engravings that have become dirty.
#5 Deep cleanse your gold jewellery at home every once in 3 months with ammonia. Ammonia can be caustic hence shouldn't be used very often. However, adding one part of ammonia to six parts of water can act as a chemical cleaner at home. Just don't soak any jewellery that has gemstones or pearls and again, not more than a minute. Take it out from the solution within a minute and wash it off in running water for a couple of minutes. Lastly, towel dry it and let it the jewels rest on a clean cloth before you finally wear it!
