Of all the DIY projects, re-furbishing old outfits has got to be my favourite! I remember using my sister's engagement lehenga dupatta and turning it into a cape, it was a much-loved outfit back then. The other day I found a pink coloured lehenga (that I had purchased on my sister's wedding) and wondered what to do with it for the longest until the idea of a mehendi outfit (the one at home where I apply my wedding mehendi) struck me! I spent around INR 12K back in 2011 for this kundan lehenga and didn't really want to do something with it that involved putting in more money and then wondering where to use it. So anyway I visited a boutique in cantt and decided to chop the lehenga skirt off and then team a sequined crop top that I bought once upon a time from Lajpat Nagar and add some accessories to pretty up the ensemble.
So obviously I was wayyy thinner in 2011 but that doesn't mean that I can't use my old clothes. The refurbishing is super simple. The only quick tips that I can share are that you really need to first find the occasion to make your old lehenga work. I had also worn my sister’s wedding lehenga once and did not put any money in tailoring but instead opted for versatile pieces to go with it. Below is a photo and you can get all details for the same HERE.

Once you freeze the occasion, think of some contrasting colours to uplift the outfit. With this pink lehenga I had a pink net dupatta that I ditched and instead got a green leheriya dupatta with pink lines to compliment the lehenga skirt. Next I added statement accessories featuring earrings mostly and some hand jewels. Again I didn’t want to go over the top with this ensemble and that’s why I avoided any jewelry around the neck. This is an outfit that I’ll wear to my ghar ki mehendi, a night before our mehendi ceremony kicks in with all our guests joining in the celebrations.
A skirt is a fun outfit that can be used for a destination wedding, wedding celebrations, dandiya nights and more. Just play with contrasting colours and add statement pieces to your outfit that do the trick.
I spent INR 2,000 + Accessories to create this entire. This cost includes the crop top, the dupatta, the juttis and the jewels. Let me know what do you think about this by dropping a comment below!
